Alaska Trip: Days 7 & 8

Day 7 – July 15
On the road at 8:30. Crossed the Continental Divide shortly later. Today started rainy and grey, but there’s blue sky ahead.

12:00 – Came to Whitehorse, Yukon. A lovely little jumping-off point w/ the Yukon’s only brewery (didn’t go, unfortunately). Population 25,000. We saw a fish ladder at the dam (no salmon yet, though). Raining again.

3:40 – Kluane Lake

Crossed into Alaska around 8:30. Nothing to report at customs.
Camped about 30 miles before Tuk, in a construction site next to the heavy equipment.

Day 8 – July 16
Left Tuk about 8, when the construction crew returned to work. Came to Fairbanks about 3:30. Beautiful weather all day. We took the car in for a pre-Dalton Highway oil change and inspection. We’re staying in the 7 Gables Inn, which was recommended to us by a friend. This evening we went to see WALL-E, which was pretty good if a bit heavyhanded. Tomorrow morning we’re heading up the Dalton Highway. We might make it all the way to Prudhoe Bay tomorrow night, unless we decide to go hiking (or have a breakdown) along the way. Wish us luck!
