Summer’s Baby Party

Summer (one of our coworkers) had a baby about 3 months ago. In China, that means you throw a huge dinner party for anyone you’ve ever met, sort of like a christening. So on Saturday night we were picked up by her husband and driven out into the countryside to their home. There we were faced with a houseful of happy people and a massive array of food.

The dinner was immense and quite delicious. Everyone was quite friendly. The Chinese guys (Summer’s 5 brothers-in-law) were quite fascinated by us. In China, that means that they want to drink with us. 10 or 15 Ganbei!s later, we were all quite inebriated. It would have been quite rude to have done anything else. I did manage to avoid smoking the obligatory gift cigarettes.

This guy was quite impressed with my beard.

We ate and drank more than our fill. Then we were presented with cakes. One for each of us. There was a stockpile of about 50 cakes, and they just passed them out to everyone. We duly took them home. They’re sitting uneaten on the kitchen table at the moment.

It was a strange but highly enjoyable experience. We all had fun.
