Observation: Serrated Knives

Serrated knives never made it to China. Though they are sometimes available in Western-style steak restaurants, the average Chinese household doesn’t have a single serrated knife. Yesterday, I tried to buy a bread knife, and found not a single serrated knife in the local hypermarket. At a guess, it’s because Chinese cooking is almost always chopped into bite-size pieces before eating. Also, the notion of bread, and sliced bread in particular, is a recent addition to the Chinese market. It just hasn’t had time to permeate the culture.
